How does the system work?

Our system utilizes advanced heat pump technology to cool the digestate and extract heat, which is then used to generate hot water at temperatures ranging from 50 to 90 degrees Celsius.


Our heat recovery system consists of modular units that are built in containerized solutions, following a plug-and-play principle. These modular heat pumps are at the core of our system, allowing for scalability and flexibility in meeting the specific requirements of each AD plant.


Below a step to step description is showing how the system works

  • STEP 1

    Anaerobic digesters operate at 35-44 and 50-60 degree C to produce biogas. Once finished, the digestate is removed from the tank. The heat in this streams can be recovered.

  • STEP 2

    Cooling the Digestate: The digestate coming from the AD plant is cooled in a special designed heat exchanger.. Two streams can be used in this heat-exchanger:


     1. digestate straight from digester


     2. thin fraction from separator 


    The amount of cooling depends on the amount of heat needed at the AD-plant

  • STEP 3

    The absorbed heat is transferred to a heat pump, where it evaporates a refrigerant. The refrigerant is then compressed, which causes the pressure and temperature to increase.


    The refrigerant releases the heat a hot-water stream to the desired temperature of 55-85°C. 


    The refrigerants used have a low GWP to assure conformity with the latest and future rules and restrictions

  • STEP 4

     The hot water, now at the desired temperature , is ready for use. It can be seamlessly integrated into the heating circuit of the AD plant, providing heat for various applications such as digester heating, space heating, or hot water supply.
